How to Practice

How to practice on MMI Interview Prep

How each station is timed and structured, what the follow-up questions are for, and how to use the platform to get the most out of every session.

How each practice station is structured

There are four stations: Ethical Dilemma, Policy & Healthcare, Personal Interview and Roleplay. Each one has its own framework of three steps, so you always know where to put your effort. Each station takes 5 minutes, after your preparation time.

In the Ethical Dilemma, Policy & Healthcare and Personal Interview stations, you speak your opening response for up to 2 minutes. That is enough time to attempt all three steps of the framework which is available in a Premium subscription. Try to genuinely cover all three steps in your opening response rather than deliberately holding one back for later.

The interviewer then asks two follow-up questions, which you answer by typing in the time that is left. These are not a sign you missed something. Real MMI interviewers commonly ask follow-ups even after a strong answer. Treat them as a chance to go deeper, not as a separate, unrelated question. Your opening response and both follow-up answers together count as one complete response, so a step you properly develop in a follow-up is credited the same as if you had covered it well from the start.

The Roleplay station works differently. You read a short scenario, then have a live spoken conversation with a character for 4 minutes. They answer out loud, like an actor in a real station. Then the examiner asks you one question about it, and you have 1 minute to answer. Both the conversation and your answer to the examiner are assessed. There are two kinds of roleplay: an Ethical Roleplay, where you handle a difficult conversation, and a Communication Roleplay, where you explain something to someone.

The Framework Guide covers the framework for each station in more depth: the steps to follow and what each one is looking for.

How to use MMI Interview Prep

1

Choose your station

Start with the stations most likely to appear in your program's MMI format. Ethical dilemmas and personal interview stations are the most common. Each station comes with preparation time, which you can set to 1 or 2 minutes.

2

Respond

Speak your response, then answer the follow-up questions or take part in the roleplay, as described above. Your spoken response is transcribed and assessed. Please use Google Chrome on a computer, because it lets you talk to the character and the examiner.

3

Review your feedback

Feedback starts with what worked, then gives you one thing to focus on next time, and shows how a stronger response would have been structured. Your score gives you a benchmark to track improvement over time.

4

Try a roleplay

In a roleplay you talk out loud with an AI character who answers out loud, a format unlike any other MMI prep tool. It tests your ability to respond to what is actually being said, adapt in real time, and handle difficult situations without a script. The examiner's question at the end is part of the assessment too.

5

Take on the full circuit

Premium members can run four stations back to back: a roleplay, a personal interview question, an ethical dilemma, then policy and healthcare. It takes about 25 to 28 minutes including preparation. Before each station the examiner tells you what is coming, and you get your feedback after each one.
